Syracuse Basketball

Coming to Cortland freshman year, I learned many new things. I learned that pronounce words very differently all over new york, I learned that there is a different name for heroes, which are known as subs upstate, and I also learned that everyone is in love with country music. Life is definitely very different upstate then what I am used to back on long island, though I have learned the upstate ways and traditions and became very accustomed to them. All of these customs are very small compared to the main thing I learned when instantly arriving at Cortland, which is Syracuse’s love and obsession of SU basketball. I have never heard more people talk about an athletic team before more then people from the Syracuse area talk about SU basketball. At first I couldn’t believe how obsessed people are over this team, knowing every players name, every fact, and never missing a single game. Being from long island, there is no one collegiate team that anyone roots for from the island, which is why I thought it was so awesome that everyone from the Syracuse area has a common interest, being his or her love for SU basketball. There fans are the most dedicated for sure and they are constantly talking about the games. I love their dedication for their team and I have always been a huge college basketball fan, so of course I soon became somewhat of a Syracuse fan as well. My friends constantly talk about how cool it is to be in the dome at a game and the excitement that comes from all the fans. Finally, yesterday I was able to experience that excitement and had the time of my life.

My friend was able to get us tickets to watch the SU basketball game in her dad’s skybox yesterday against UCONN. We had the best seats in the house compared to the other 33,000 fans that were there to support the orange. I have never witnessed such a huge fan base before and the energy of the crowd commenced from even before the game and continued till the very end of the game after Syracuse had won. It was an amazing experience being at the game and being able to be a part of such a legendary college athletics program. College basketball is very popular all over the United States and it is a great game to be played. The work ethic and talent of the student athletes is unbelievable. Their strength, power, and skills are very experienced and like no other. These men were in the best shape and their hard work definitely was noticed. What is great about basketball is that it is the type of sport that does not require expensive equipment at all and does not need and special supervision or organization. Anyone can simply grab a basketball and head to the nearest park or street and start up a game with their friends. Basketball is a great workout and it is also a great way to socialize with others. The game of basketball has saved many kids growing up in bad areas from staying off the streets and it has created many social relationships. Overall, basketball is a great game to be played by anyone willing to stay physically active.
