Setting Boundaries

There are many people in the world who give up when they are pushed down, they quit when the going gets tough, or they simply do not believe in themselves. People in all different fields of work and study exemplify these traits, whether it is in the office, on the field, or making sales, there are just some type of people not willing to go that extra mile. Setting your own boundaries and believing in yourself, is one lesson I learned from Darwin Barney, and his passion for the game of baseball.

Barney is a ¼ Japanese, ¼ Korean, and “the rest to him is white.” He is the starting second baseman for the Chicago Cubs and is being considered as a corner stone for the franchise. His motivation was breaking the stereotypes that he occasionally heard such as not being big enough. Even though he may not be the biggest player in the league, he has worked hard to push that element aside and capitalize on his strengths. Barney could have easily given up due to his size, though his father was another motivational factor, being a very successful point guard in college basketball at only 5’6. Barney chose baseball because he loved the game and excelled in the sport. He won a state championship in high school and in 2010 he was voted into the college World Series legends team, joining legendary ball players such as Barry Bonds.

Barney is a great example of  someone coming from the bottom and making it the big leagues, all on his own. From the very beginning, Barney set his own boundaries, knowing that he wanted to make it to the MLB and he was not going to settle for anything else. He is known for his excellent ball play, knowledge of the game, and for all his hard work. He is a great role model to everyone and inspiration to those who are as determined as he is.
